de quel StJulien s’agit-il?

….. 2003 St Julien 16.5 Drink 2010-16

Blackish crimson. Not much nose – is this because it is, in the way of a first growth, hiding its light under a bushel, or is it just flavourless? Lots of very ripe Merlot. Could do with a bit more structure. Inky tannins intrude towards the end but not a well-melded whole. Just lacks a vital spark. Certainly very ripe and well handled but not the usual ……….magic. Hollow before inky finish.

Lynch Bages (FV 17.5) (WS 92-94)

is consistently one of our biggest selling wines and once again Lynch Bages delivers the goods. The Cabernet here was not picked until the very end of September and it is deep, powerful and ripe. A great, complex, mint, tar and cigar-box nose. Intense Cabernet character. Rounded and supple on the palate with a kick of tannin on the finish. Classic and delicious. â€œVery rich and decadent style to this. Full-bodied, velvety tannins and a delicious finish. Flashy wine. Long and seductive. Maybe even better in bottle.â€ WS

Ch Lynch-Bages 2003 Pauillac 16 Drink 2008-20

Very healthy crimson. Notably fragrant, almost floral, but quite light. Skinny tannins and very marked greenness. Certainly not one of the successes of the vintage.

Pontet Canet 95-100

Huge, thick nose. Incredibly dense wine. This is a real powerhouse infused with roasted black fruits and tannin. It has the density of the super-seconds without the polish. Hugely impressive but will require patience. â€œFull-bodied, very rich and powerful with massive tannins but it finishes sweet and ripe. This is muscular, but then it turns to crushed fruit. Super-seductive. The best Pontet I have ever tasted.â€ WS

Ch Pontet Canet 2003 Pauillac 16.5 Drink 2009-16

Mid crimson. Dense. Hidden nose. Slightly overripe on the nose – a little Brule. Good acidity to compensate but not integrated. Not fine. Rather inky finish. And no great weight in the middle.

Ch Trotanoy 2003 Pomerol 17.5 2009-22

Unusually deep purple for a Moueix wine. Lowkey but convincingly subtle nose. Intense, well-mannered nose. Very well balanced. Slightly dry finish. Some very ripe notes but there is a freshness on the finish. Good for the vintage but will probably never be one of the great Trotanoys.

Fabulous stuff. Extremely deep purple. Very deep and dense in every way yet with wonderful freshness and vivacity. Rich, animal and meaty at first on the nose but then on the palate it’s miraculously well defined and delineated. Great opulence but without a hint of overripeness ………. Great clarity. The tannins are beautifully ripe and carry through the tasting experience as opposed to sneaking in nastily at the end. There is a beginning, middle and end to this wine that is so refreshing it’s like an energiser.
